The Boston-Dohlman keratoprosthesis is used on patients who have already failed 2 or more corneal transplants, and in which there’s little hope that others may work.  Some examples include multiple rejections, heavy vascularization, some virus infections, chemical burns and scarring of the outer surfaces of the eye.

These patients need to use a bandage contact lens at all times, and require antibiotic eyedrops forever.  Glaucoma and its treatment can be important issues.
