Penetrating keratoplasty

This procedure has been the “gold standard” for decades - the full-thickness replacement of all layers of the cornea.  It is still the treatment of choice for patients who have corneal opacities or distortions, or for tectonic reasons.  The surgery shown uses both single sutures as well as a running suture, to even out the stresses and pulls on the tissue (and therefore minimizing astigmatism).
